Obituary

Suzan (Susie) Jeanette Hays left this world to be with her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, 27th, 2026, at Hallmark Care Center in Mt. Vernon, Iowa, at the age of 77. Susie was born in Cedar Falls, Iowa, on July 25, 1948. Susie was the daughter of Floyd and Phyllis Hays.

Susie graduated from Cedar Falls High School in 1966. Susie then attended Iowa State University, where she graduated with her Bachelor of Science in Zoology. She later continued her education at the University of Iowa, ultimately earning a master’s degree in biology. Susie spent many years educating high school students and later retired from the University of Iowa, where she worked in cellular research.

In her later years, Susie enjoyed spending time with her pets. Susie was the dog Mom of Finley and Hugel, and over the years, had many cats. She kept a meticulous Japanese Koi pond and an indoor aquarium. Many fun memories were created at her yearly class reunions at Sturgis Falls Days in Cedar Falls and at her family’s cottage on the Cedar River. Susie also enjoyed crafting and sewing. She will be remembered by the beautiful, handmade Christmas ornaments she gifted her nieces.

Susie is survived by her life partner Todd Kleinmeyer of North Liberty, Iowa; along with three sisters-in-law. Kathy (Terry) Zimmerman of Oxford, Iowa, Tyra (Doug) Hess of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Ruby Kleinmeyer of Williamsburg, Iowa. Susie also leaves behind multiple nieces and great-nieces/nephews. In her final days, Suzie found great support and comfort with her childhood friends, including her special friend Tami Lorenz.

Susie is preceded in death by her parents, sister (Nancy Hays), and brother-in-law (Rick Kleinmeyer).

Per Susie’s wishes, no formal service will be conducted.

Susie is being cared for by Celebrate Life Iowa.

A general memorial fund has been established for Susie; those who wish to contribute can contact Susie’s family.
