On April 10, 2026, Susan Eller Tomlinson(Carnnahan), 62, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loved ones.
Susan was born on January 12, 1964, in Kansas City, Missouri, to Linda Starr and Robert Carnahan. At the age of seven, she and her siblings were adopted by Betty Reed, and the family relocated to Diagonal, Iowa. Susan later moved to Lenox, Iowa, where she attended Lenox High School and met her first husband, James Eller.
Susan and James began their life together in Sharpsburg, Iowa, where they welcomed their first daughter, Michaela. Shortly thereafter, they purchased a home in St. Charles, Iowa, where they continued to grow their family, welcoming two more daughters, Betsy and Rachel. During these years, Susan worked at Summerset Haven, where she compassionately cared for individuals living with mental illness—a role she deeply valued.
In 1995, Susan and James divorced. The following year, she was united in marriage to Greg Tomlinson. Susan moved to Martensdale, Iowa, where she embraced her life with Greg and his daughter, Persephone. She continued her passion for caregiving through her work at Winifred Law.
Susan's greatest joy in life was her family. Beginning in 2002, she welcomed her first grandchild, with many more to follow. Her fourteen grandchildren were the light of her life. She cherished the time spent with them on the farm, where she and Greg raised cattle, often teaching them how to bottle-feed calves and sharing in the simple joys of country life.
Susan also found joy in traveling and spending relaxed afternoons on the porch with friends, enjoying margaritas, laughter, and meaningful conversation—moments that reflected her warm and social spirit.
In her later years, Susan spent time in Winterset, Iowa, surrounded by her children and grandchildren, creating lasting memories with those she loved most.
Susan is survived by her devoted husband, Gregg Tomlinson; her daughters, Michaela (Joe) Allsup, Betsy (Scott) Zetterberg, Rachel Eller (Josh Lincoln), and Persephone (Rob); her sisters, Candace, Lori, Nancy, and Betty Jean; her eighteen beloved grandchildren; and a few great-grandchildren with one more on the way.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Linda Beginnis, Robert Carnahan, and Betty Reed; and her brother, Robert Carnahan II.
Susan will be remembered for her kind heart, her dedication to caring for others, and the deep love she had for her family. Her legacy lives on in the lives she touched and the family she cherished.
