Obituary

Steven Allen Orton, born on March 31, 1953, in Elkhart, Indiana, passed away peacefully on August 13, 2025, in Des Moines, Iowa, at the age of 72. He leaves behind a legacy woven with love, faith, and a cherished commitment to family and community. His memorial service is pending. Educationally, Steven's journey began in Nappanee, Indiana, where he attended Nappanee High School. His thirst for knowledge extended beyond formal education; he was a lifelong learner who enjoyed reading scripture and deepening his faith. Following school, he married the love of his life Toni Weston on April 10, 1971. The couple raised their daughter in Indiana. A dedicated member of the workforce, Steven spent many years as a receiver at Laslle Bristol before retiring in 2018. His work ethic was admirable, but what he truly treasured was the time spent with loved ones. Steven was a proud husband, father, and grandfather, roles that defined his existence and filled his days with joy. Steven's strong Christian faith was an anchor in his life; he often turned to scripture for guidance and comfort. His favorite Bible verse, Isaiah 40:31, resonated deeply with him: "But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint." This verse was not just a collection of words for Steven; it embodied his spirit of resilience and hope. He was an active member of the New Creation Fellowship Church, where he offered his time and service. Additionally, he served on the Bayard Library Board for many years, showcasing his belief in the power of community and the importance of education for all. In his personal life, Steven relished the simple pleasures. He could often be found on his deck, watching sunsets alongside Toni, enjoying the tranquility of nature as he fed and observed the birds fluttering about. His passion for the outdoors was matched only by his love for tinkering with his home and yard. These hobbies were not just leisurely pursuits but moments where he created lasting memories with family. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Dave (Elaine) Orton and June Orton, along with his brother-in-law Clement Riedner. While they may have parted ways in this life, their love remains a comforting presence in the hearts of those who knew him. Steven is survived by his loving wife, Toni Orton; his daughter, Jennifer (Arvin) Barrear-Six; and his adored grandchildren, Tyler, Bella, Landon, and Ryley; siblings Sandy Riedner, Brian (Judy) Orton, and Darlene (Kevin) White, along with many nieces and nephews who filled his heart with pride and affection. Steven's family will forever remember the warmth of his presence and the lessons he imparted. As we reflect on the life of Steven Allen Orton, we celebrate a remarkable man whose devotion to his family, faith, and community shines brightly. His memory will continue to inspire those he touched, reminding us to wait on the Lord, nurture our relationships, and cherish the moments that define our lives.
