Obituary

Stanley Neal Goes, 73, passed away on May 2, 2026, in Des Moines, Iowa. Stanley was born on February 17, 1953, to Bernard and Velda Goes of Wymore, Nebraska. He was a 1971 graduate of Southern High School where he was a strong competitor, being a part of the conference championship football team, state champion baseball team, and state wrestling team. He also loved his musical performances with the barbershop quartet in the musical "Music Man," as well as holding the first chair trumpet seat in the high school concert band. He loved showing his 4-H cattle at the Gage County Fair as well as the State Fair and often found himself in the champion photo. He continued his education at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln where he marched in the UNL marching band and enjoyed performing in the Orange Bowl halftime show. Upon entering the workforce, he spent the majority of his life in Nebraska, primarily in Lincoln, where he built his career and raised his family. Stanley worked for many years at Nebraska Public Power District, where he was part of the power plant operations. Following his time there, he transitioned into landscaping and later worked in fertilization distribution. He took pride in his work and the relationships he built along the way. Outside of work, Stanley was a dedicated fan of Nebraska athletics. He especially loved watching the Nebraska Cornhuskers football and rarely missed a game. Whether it was football season or any Husker sport, he was always following along and cheering them on. He also was an avid fan of hunting and fishing and loved comparing who got the biggest buck each deer season. Stanley will be remembered as a kind and dependable man who was always willing to help when needed. He had a natural way of making everyone he met feel better after they left the conversation. He had a strong sense of humor and a stubborn streak—something those who knew him best would say was simply part of being a Goes. Above all, he valued his family and the time spent with them. He is survived by his three sons, all of whom live in Des Moines, Iowa: Matthew Allen Goes (Andrea) and their children Nolan and Brynna; Jonathan Lee Goes (Lacey) and their children Carter and Fisher; and Justin Michael Goes (Megan) and their children Gabriel and Oliver; and remembered by Chris Fisher, the mother of his children, also of Des Moines, Iowa. He is survived by his siblings: Rodney (Linda) of Wymore, NE; Bruce of Wymore, NE; Mark (Patty) of Odell, NE; Julie (the late Terry Correll) of North Platte, NE; and Scott (Stacy) of Cortland, NE. He is also survived by his nieces and nephews: Tyler, Tanner (Talia), Travis, Brenna (Justin), Tricia, Gracie (Wylie), Faith (Conner), Hope, Jacob (Chelsey), Gabriel, Ruby, and Hallee. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bernard and Velda Goes, and brother-in-law Terry Correll. A celebration of life and graveside ceremony will be held at a later date in Wymore.
