Obituary

Michael "Mike" Ernest Krantz, 70, of Coralville, Iowa, passed away peacefully on December 3, 2025, after a courageous battle with cancer. His indomitable spirit and infectious positivity blessed all who knew him, creating cherished memories that will forever warm our hearts. Born on February 27, 1955, in Washington, Iowa, Mike was raised by his loving parents, Ernie and Isabelle (Kennard) Krantz. He attended Highland High School in Riverside, Iowa, where he excelled as a tailback on the football team and was later awarded membership onto the 1973-74 Prep All-American Football Team. It was during his time at high school that he met the love of his life, Carla Arndt. Mike graduated with the class of 1974. Following school, he had offers to play college football, but chose to start his family. Mike and Carla's relationship flourished, leading to a beautiful marriage that has stood the test of time for over 51 years. Together, they built a life filled with love, laughter, and deep connections with family. Mike dedicated his life to various pursuits, from farming to a career at the University of Iowa as a trained steamfitter/pipefitter, to helping his children with family restaurants and construction. For an incredible 50 years, he also devoted his time to driving a school bus, having an impact on countless young lives along the way. He was a true jack-of-all-trades, always ready to lend a helping hand to family and friends. His boundless love as a husband, dad, and papa highlighted his character, embodying the essence of what it meant to be a caring and supportive family man. This time of year brings memories of Mike putting on his Santa suit and traveling around to small towns, local nursing homes, and riding one fire truck at a time. He lit up the lives of children and spread smiles wherever he went. His big heart, warm smile, and generous hugs created a profound impact, and he will be missed more than words can express. Mike was always a passionate supporter of his beloved Iowa Hawkeye Football team. He embraced every opportunity to tailgate, and his enthusiasm was contagious. To honor his memory, we invite you to join his family for Mike's last tailgate on Thursday, December 18, 2025, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Kinnick Stadium. Gate D, McCord Indoor Club, Level 1. Come when you can and stay as long as you like. There will be food, drinks, music, and the vibrant lights of Kinnick Stadium to ensure Mike is with us in spirit. The evening will include heartfelt speeches and an open mic for anyone who wishes to share treasured stories about this extraordinary man. Mike is survived by his beloved wife of 51 years, Carla Krantz; his children, Jaime (Rob) Maher and Shawn Krantz; and his cherished grandchildren, Aiden, Carleigh, Kenzie, Addison, and Zander Maher. He leaves behind his brother, Dallas Krantz, as well as numerous brothers-in-law, sister-in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins, and a circle of close friends who will carry his memory in their hearts. He was welcomed into Heaven by his parents, his brothers Steve and Ronnie, and other loved ones. In celebration of Mike's life and legacy, memorial contributions may be directed to Carla Krantz. Carla is in the process of establishing a "Whatever It Takes" memorial fund that will be used to help others fighting cancer. Celebrate Life Iowa has been entrusted with Mike's cremation care. May his spirit continue to touch the lives of all who knew him.
