Obituary

Lee William Meyer was born on July 30, 1952 to Harold and Estella (Andreasen) Meyer in Iowa Falls, Iowa. He graduated from Iowa Falls High School in 1970 where he participated in wrestling and FFA. He served in the Navy from 1970 to 1976 primarily stationed out of Norfolk, Virginia. His military training included avionic technician and served a tour of duty on the John F Kennedy aircraft carrier. During his enlistment, he married the love of his life, Debra Mae Cook on September 4, 1971. Following the Navy, he worked for Rockwell Collins Avionics for 37 years, starting as an electronic technician, continuing on to international avionics trainer, followed by lead technical writer. He retired in 2014 and moved to Altoona.

Lee’s passions involved his family and animals. Deb and Lee were foster parents for about 6 years to eleven children before their children Lucas and Melissa were born. He was an Asst. Boys Scout Leader, camping with his family, competed in dog and horse shows, and was an AMHR/ASPC Steward (a licensed official for registered horse shows) across the midwest. He also served as Council President and taught confirmation at Hope Lutheran in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Lee and Deb moved to Boone, Iowa in 2016 to be closer to family. Their senior years were spent traveling, cuddling grandchildren, and enjoying camaraderie with friends and family. Lee courageously fought prostate cancer, originally diagnosed in 2010. God’s blessings allowed us fifteen memory filled years before his cancer worsened. He passed at the VA Hospice Center in Des Moines, Iowa on September 10, 2026.

Lee is survived by his wife of 55 years, Deb, and his children Melissa Carlson (Coltrane) of Boone, IA, Lucas Meyer of CO, and his devoted service dog, Maggie. Lee was a loving and fun Grandpa to Melody and Miles Carlson and Owen Meyer. He is also survived by his siblings Janet Adams (Mike) of West Des Moines, IA, Kim Whitmore of Wahpeton, ND, Doug Meyer of Columbia, Connie Mohlman of Des Moines, IA, and Mark Nicholson of Hampton, IA along with his sister-in-law Karla Cook of Balsam Lake, WI and family. He loved his many nieces and nephews. Lee was preceded in death by his son, Robert, his parents Harold and Estella Meyer, his stepmother Deloris Meyer and his sisters Clarine Rater and Jane Elkin.

Memorials may be made to the family.
