Elizabeth (Betty) Dahnke, born on December 26, 1952, in Iowa City, Iowa, passed away peacefully on June 4, 2026, at the Dennis & Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy. Surrounded by her three children during her final moments, Betty left behind a legacy defined by creativity, compassion, and an enduring love for her family.
Throughout her life, Betty pursued a diverse and fulfilling career in cosmetology. From owning a salon to teaching and representing beauty products, she embraced every role with innovation and thoughtfulness. Her professional journey culminated in a well-deserved reward—the trip of a lifetime to Australia—a testament to her tenacity and excellence in her field.
Beyond her professional achievements, Betty’s true passion lay in creating lasting memories for her children and grandchildren. She poured her heart into holiday celebrations, transforming them with her playful spirit and inventive twists that brought joy and laughter to every gathering. Her famous “Grandma Camps” were legendary—a perfect blend of her vivid imagination, artistic flair, and nurturing nature, offering her grandchildren treasured experiences that will echo through generations.
An avid artist and painter, Betty viewed the world as her canvas, a perspective she extended to her mastery in gardening. Her yard blossomed into a living masterpiece, a sanctuary showcasing her dedication and love for nature. She relished her time outdoors, tending her garden with the same care she bestowed upon her family. These quiet moments complemented her lively lunch dates with friends and comical fishing outings with Celeste, reflecting the balance Betty maintained between joyful companionship and serene reflection.
A lover of animals throughout her life, Betty’s affection spanned from her childhood horses to her beloved dogs Vanna, Jasmine and Kizzy, who were ever faithful by her side. Her caring heart knew no bounds, and she shared her warmth freely with both people and animals fortunate enough to cross her path.
Betty is survived by a loving family who were the center of her universe: her devoted sons, Clint Hospodarsky and Jody Hospodarsky; daughter-in-law Ruth Hospodarsky; and grandchildren Morgan and Rylie Hospodarsky. Her daughter Tammy Miller, son-in-law Tony Miller, and grandchildren Wexton, Vauhn, and Dalen Miller also carry forward her legacy of love and creativity. These cherished relationships were a source of immense joy and pride for Betty.
She was preceded in death by her beloved sister, Patty Eckermann, and her parents, Dale and Kay Dahnke, whose memories she held dear throughout her life.
A celebration of Betty’s life will be held on Sunday, June 14th, from 1:00 to 4:00 PM at Zeppelins in Cedar Rapids. Friends and family are invited to gather, share stories, and honor the extraordinary life of a woman whose kindness and creativity touched so many hearts.
Though Betty has departed this life, the memories she crafted and the love she so freely gave will continue to inspire and comfort those left behind. Her legacy is a testament to a life well-lived—a beautiful soul who will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
