Obituary

DaMara Milianta-Peterson, 27, passed away peacefully on May 4, 2026, surrounded by family. Born on November 15, 1998, in Ottumwa, Iowa, DaMara brought light and joy to all who knew her during her too-brief time on this earth. From a young age, DaMara displayed a passion for life that was as vibrant as it was inspiring. A whimsical soul with an unshakable love of magic and wonder, DaMara found beauty in nature and life's fairytales. She preferred legends over logic and embraced the enchantment of the world around her. This sense of wonder carried into her love for dancing, acting, and performing; she adored the stage and never missed an opportunity to strike a pose or step into the spotlight. Strong-willed and fiercely devoted to those she loved, DaMara was a force of nature who stood firm in what she believed was right. One of the ways this love manifested was in cooking and baking. At just ten years old, she began cooking meals for her family and, by the age of twelve, she was catering small events, delighting guests with her culinary creations. Baking brought her immense joy — she loved watching people's faces light up with their first bite of one of her delicious treats. Her love extended beyond her own family; she dedicated herself to baking for deployed troops, one year sending eight dozen cookies weekly to those serving overseas. In addition to those serving in the military, she had a special place in her heart for animals, especially aging pets, and often performed at-home nursing duties to ensure their comfort in their later years. Her compassion knew no bounds. DaMara found delight in many aspects of life: gardening, swimming, celebrating holidays with gusto, watching Disney movies, and creating meals from homegrown produce and wildflowers. Her zest for life was infectious; she brought fun and joy wherever she went. DaMara's faith was central to her life. She had a deep relationship with Jesus Christ and fervently studied the scriptures, reading through the entirety of the Bible three times. Her unwavering belief assured her that when she left this earth, she would be welcomed into heaven by her Savior. Before passing, DaMara expressed hope that her departure might somehow inspire others to come to know Jesus Christ. DaMara was the beloved daughter of Dianne Milianta and Dale Peterson of Kellogg, IA, and the cherished sister of Dakota Milianta-Peterson of Ottumwa, IA and half sister of Jeremy Peterson of Knoxville, IA. She was the granddaughter of Joseph Milianta of Brookings, SD, and Jean Peterson of Knoxville, IA. She is predeceased by her grandparents, Linda Milianta of Brookings and Jerry Peterson of Knoxville. Her legacy is one of love and an enduring faith that continues to inspire those who knew her. May DaMara's memory bring comfort to all who mourn her passing while celebrating the extraordinary life she lived. The Celebration of Life for DaMara will be Saturday, May 30, at 11 am at Ottumwa Community Church, 305 Walnut Ave., Ottumwa, IA 52501. The family will be available to visit at 10:00 a.m. A light luncheon will follow her memorial service. Please feel free to bring any stories or thoughts about DaMara you would like to share.
