Born in this world on September 4, 1960, and released to the eternal on March 30, 2026, Clayton Schexnayder, a man of incredible warmth and boundless spirit, has left us with a legacy of love, laughter, and life. As Mark Twain once said, "The two most important days in your life are the day you are born, and the day you find out why." Clayton not only discovered his 'why' but lived it fiercely, touching countless lives along the way. He worked on an oil rig in Louisiana and then as a security guard in Cedar Rapids, Iowa until his illness took over.
Clayton married the love of his life, Christine, and with this union came four children. Clayton and Christine were married for 42 years. He was a beacon of light in a world that can sometimes seem dark. His infectious laughter, unparalleled kindness, and unyielding optimism made him the heart of every gathering. He had an uncontained zest for life, a passion for the new and unexplored, and a heart big enough to embrace everyone he met. He saw the world not as it was, but as it could be, and he inspired others to do the same. As Helen Keller believed, "Life is either a daring adventure or nothing at all." Clayton chose the adventure, and he made it a beautiful journey not just for himself, but for everyone he knew. Clayton Schexnayder's life was a testament to the power of love, resilience, and unwavering belief in the goodness of humanity. He was a superb storyteller, a mentor to many, a friend to all, and a man who deemed his wealth by the richness of his relationships rather than the size of his bank account. Ralph Waldo Emerson once wrote, "To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived, this is to have succeeded." By Emerson's measure, Clayton was immensely successful. His impact will echo in the hearts of those who were lucky enough to know him.
He is preceded in death by his mother, Irene Schexnayder Robinson; his brother, Jr. Garcia; his uncles, Clifton, Carol, and Clayton Schexnayder; his aunts, Rhena Garcia and Helen Schexnayder; his mother and fathers-in-law, Adam and Delta Thibodeaux; and brothers-in-law, Allen Dale and Laurent Adam Thibodeaux Jr.
Clayton is survived by his wife, Christine; children, Justin (Julia), Jamie (Cortland), Meggan (Teddy), Jacob (Zee) Schexnayder; grandchildren, Janyia (Tabius) Schexnayder, Chadrick "Pop" (Molly) Hamilton, Ahnee Hamilton, Dominick, Daylon, and Trisslyn Schexnayder; great-grandchildren, Iyalahh Hamilton, Thyri Levy, and Elena Schexnayder (July 2026); sisters, Pam Baney and Pat (Joe) Godlewski; brothers, Darren (Kathy) Schexnayder, Art Garcia and Butch Schexnayder; god-children, Tanyia Broussard, Mandy Estillete and Tammy Guidry; and the family dog, Buddy.
