Carrie Calhoun Bird
November 3, 1934 to January 6, 2026
Carrie (Kay) Calhoun Bird, age 91, of Iowa City, Iowa died peacefully on January 6,
2026.
Carrie was born on November 3, 1934, in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. Due to her father's
occupation, the family made several moves during her earlier years, eventually settling
in Menasha, Wisconsin. Carrie graduated from Menasha High School, where she won
medals for excellence in both chemistry and geometry. Carrie attended Antioch College
and Lawrence University but eventually ended up at the University of Wisconsin, where
she met her future husband, Joseph Bird, on a blind date. Carrie was a registered
medical technologist and worked for several years at a family practice until the birth of
her first child.
Carrie was active at St. Paul's United Methodist Churc,h where she served on the
council and many committees. Carrie made life-long friends at the church and remained
in touch with them through the years.
Carrie started competing in triathlons and bicycle road races later in life. She was a
fierce competitor who gave her all to everything she did.
Carrie was a determined, resilient person who overcame every obstacle life put before
her. She loved her family and found special joy in her grandchildren. She was a bit of
a prankster and often caught people by surprise with her sense of humor.
Even after the death of her beloved husband, she continued to persevere and be engaged in life.
She is survived by her three children: Carrie Jeanne (Tom) Carter, Joseph Scott Bird,
and Stephen (Nancy) Bird; three grandchildren: Elisabeth, Katherine, and Joseph; and
two sisters: Jackie Calhoun Smith and Christine Calhoun.
She was preceded in death by her husband of sixty-nine years, Joseph Ronald Bird; her son, John Edward Bird; and her parents, Granville and Janet Calhoun.
