Barbara 'Sue' Dennis, 89, of State Center, passed away on Thursday, January
8, 2026, at Windsor Manor Assisted Living, located in Nevada, Iowa, under
the care of Suncrest Hospice.
Sue Dennis was born on March 7, 1936, on a farm near Greenfield, Iowa, to
William M. and Lois L. (Alley) Hinds. She graduated from Greenfield High School
in 1954. On April 15, 1956, Sue was united in marriage to Dewey Milo Dennis in Greenfield, beginning a partnership that would span a lifetime. During their early
years together, Sue and Dewey lived for brief periods in North Carolina, Indianola,
and Des Moines before settling permanently in State Center in 1961, where they built their life and raised their family. Sue exemplified a strong work ethic while remaining deeply devoted to her family, raising six children, and faithfully supporting Dewey as he spent endless hours providing financially for the family.
Sue held a variety of positions throughout her career, including working as a
bookkeeper at Banker's Life and a typesetter for the State Center newspaper.
Once all of her children were school-aged, she began her longest and final
career as a Program Technician/Analyst at the Farm Service Agency within
the USDA Service Center, beginning in Marshalltown and later moving to
Adel, Iowa, where she devoted 25 years of dedicated service.
A loyal and faithful member of the First Presbyterian Church in State Center,
Sue was deeply involved in her denomination and with the various social
networks she was part of throughout life. She was a memorial committee
servant and enjoyed being a member of Sisters in Christ. For some time, Sue
was an active member of the Royal Neighbors of America organization. Sue
found delight in her women's coffee gatherings, playing bingo, bunco,
dominoes, and many card games—especially Hand & Foot and Canasta. She
was an accomplished seamstress who especially loved quilting, and she took
great pride in gardening and canning. For several winter seasons in retirement,
Dewey and Sue spent time traveling to Texas, where they gained an entire park
full of resident 'snowbird' friends.
For the final stage of life, Sue continued to find happiness in companionship
during her residency at Windsor Manor Assisted Living, where she enjoyed
participating in various group activities, bus rides, and spending time with
staff and other residents who became like family. Sue challenged herself by
attempting to know absolutely everyone's name, along with a tidbit of
personal information about each one of them. She truly cared deeply and had
much gratitude for each person encountered throughout her life. Above all,
Sue cherished quality time shared with her family and friends, and she will
be remembered for her kindness, graciousness, dedication, providing,F and
steady presence in the lives of those who loved her.
Sue is survived by her children: Rickey (Cynthia) Dennis of Traer, Cynthia
Wagner of Oskaloosa, Bradley (Gretchen) Dennis of Ely, Timmy (Ashley)
Dennis of Medina, Ohio, Jennifer (Joey) Boevers of Cylinder and Melissa
Jorgenson of State Center. Grandchildren: Michael (Heather), Heather
(Aaron), Nikki (Nick), Josey, Lucey, Brady, Remington, Alison, Ryerson,
Jameson, Tabor, Corinne and Reyna. She is also survived by great-grandchildren: Aniston, Raelynn, Rory, Kira, and Brynlee.
Sue is preceded in death by her husband, Dewey; her parents, William and
Lois; infant son, Michael Jay; brother, Edward Neil Hinds; and her faithful dog,
Buddy.
To commemorate the life and legacy of Sue, a celebratory gathering at the
First Presbyterian Church of State Center, Iowa, is intended for Saturday
afternoon, March 7th, 2026, in accordance with her 90th birthday. Memorials
may be directed to the Sue Dennis Family at PO Box 163, State Center, IA
